What altitude do you skydive from (and why it matters)
Published on September 19, 2026 · 4 min read

What height do you jump from on a skydive? In Italy there is no single standard altitude: it changes from one school to another. We climb to 4,200 metres, with roughly 25 minutes of ascent and the parachute opening at around 1,500 metres. Altitude is the figure that decides how long freefall lasts.
It is one of those blunt questions that comes up before every booking, and the honest answer is: it depends on the dropzone. Here are the factors involved, and what they change for the person jumping.

Book now- In Italy jump altitudes vary from school to school: there is no single figure.
- Our dropzone in Casale Monferrato climbs to 4,200 metres, the same for every tandem.
- More altitude means more seconds of freefall and more time under canopy.
- The scenic climb takes about 25 minutes.
- The parachute opens at around 1,500 metres, after freefall.
- Altitude depends on the airfield, the aircraft and the available airspace.
What height do you jump from?
Our jump altitude is 4,200 metres, the same for every tandem jump: it is among the highest altitudes commonly used for tandems in Italy. In general, altitude varies from dropzone to dropzone.
It comes down to three factors: the airfield and its airspace, the type of aircraft, and how the school is organised.
The higher the altitude, the more complete the experience: freefall lasts longer and there is more room for the canopy flight. If you have never jumped before, our guide to what tandem skydiving is and how it works walks through the whole sequence.
Why altitude matters: more freefall, more margin
Freefall lasts around 50-60 seconds, up to about a minute, and depends on the exit altitude. The higher you start, the more seconds build up before the opening; the lower you start, the fewer. The full set of numbers, speed included, is in the article on how long freefall lasts and how fast you go.
| Situation | What changes for the jumper |
|---|---|
| Higher altitude | Longer freefall and more time under canopy |
| Lower altitude | Shorter freefall, less time in the air |
| 4,200 metres (our altitude) | Around 50-60 seconds of freefall |
What determines a school's jump altitude?
Not every dropzone can climb to any altitude. It takes an airfield with suitable airspace, an aircraft that can reach that height in a reasonable time, and an organisation able to run the jumps safely.
Altitude is not a marketing detail: it is a technical choice that depends on the facility itself.
The climb: about 25 minutes to altitude
The scenic climb takes about 25 minutes. That is when you get comfortable with your instructor, the systems are checked and you watch the landscape widen metre after metre.
From 4,200 metres the view takes in the whole of Monferrato, the course of the Po and, on clear days, the Alps on the horizon. Many people remember it as one of the finest moments of the day.
At what altitude does the parachute open?
The parachute opens at around 1,500 metres. Your instructor handles it, checking the altimeter: from that moment the speed drops and 5-10 minutes of canopy flight begin.
Why not open right after exit? Because freefall is the heart of the experience: you stay in freefall for around 50-60 seconds, and only then does the canopy come out. Our article on what it feels like during a skydive tells the story phase by phase.
Why we climb to 4,200 metres
Our dropzone has a high, fixed altitude for every tandem: more freefall, a wider view, more time under canopy.
The altitude is included in the price of the jump: from 180 € on weekdays and 200 € at the weekend, according to the official price list.
If you are deciding where to jump, compare altitudes between schools: at the same price, it is the figure that changes the experience most. Options and services are on the prices page.
