What to do on a weekend in Casale Monferrato: 6 ideas

Casale Monferrato is the right destination for a slow weekend: an elegant old town on the river Po, the UNESCO-listed Monferrato hills just minutes away, historic markets and wineries. And in the middle of it all there is a dropzone where you climb to altitude with a parachute. Six ideas to build your weekend around, from the quietest to the most memorable.

The town is easy to reach from Piedmont, Lombardy and Liguria, and it is a pleasure to explore on foot. The ideal format: half a day at the dropzone and the rest among villages, wineries and local restaurants.

What to do in and around Casale Monferrato: 6 ideas

Six ideas to combine according to your time and the season, from the old town to the UNESCO hills.

1. The old town and the Castello dei Paleologi

Piazza Mazzini with its arcades, the Duomo di Sant'Evasio, the Teatro Municipale and the Castello dei Paleologi: the fortress dominates the town. A slow half-day walk, with a coffee stop under the arcades.

2. The markets: the twice-weekly one and the Antiques Market

The twice-weekly market in piazza Castello has animated the town for more than a hundred and fifty years, and it is one of Piedmont's markets of historic value.

On the second Sunday of every month, August excluded, comes the Antiques Market: more than 300 stalls between piazza Castello and the streets of the centre, together with the zero-kilometre Farmer Market.

3. Wineries and UNESCO hills

A few minutes from the centre the Monferrato hills begin, part of the Piedmont vineyard landscape inscribed on the UNESCO list. Many wineries open for tastings: book ahead and spend the afternoon among the vines.

4. The Sacro Monte di Crea

Half an hour from town, the Sacro Monte di Crea is part of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, a UNESCO World Heritage site: frescoed chapels set in a nature park, perfect for a Sunday out of town.

5. A day at the Acqui thermal baths

Acqui Terme, with its springs and thermal establishments, is a short distance away and pairs perfectly with a weekend in the area: half a day between pools and treatments, ideal in autumn and winter.

6. A skydive over the Monferrato

And then there is the idea that makes the weekend unforgettable: a tandem skydive from the Casale Monferrato dropzone, with the climb by plane, the freefall and the canopy flight over the hills.

No experience is needed: you go up attached to an instructor, and whoever comes along watches from the ground.

The tandem jump: how to fit it into your weekend

The experience takes half a day: arrival at the airfield, briefing and kitting up, the climb and the jump, the landing. If you have never jumped before, every step is described in the first time guide. The rest of your time is free for the area.

The best way to build the weekend: jump in the morning, when the air is calmer, and spend the afternoon among wineries and villages (or the other way round, if you want the jump as a grand finale).

How to plan the day and how to get here

Casale Monferrato can be reached in a day from Piedmont, Lombardy and Liguria: the dropzone is at the town's airfield, with directions and a map on the where we are page. Our advice is to arrive with a little margin, bring a comfortable change of clothes and keep the afternoon free.

The format that works: jump in the first part of the day, town and countryside for the rest.

EventWhen
Twice-weekly marketTuesdays and Fridays, piazza Castello
Antiques MarketSecond Sunday of the month (August excluded), 8am-5pm
Zero-kilometre Farmer MarketSame day as the Antiques Market, in front of the Palazzina Liberty

Calendars and opening times should always be checked on the town council's official channels before planning your visit.

One possible order for the weekend: the market in piazza Castello on Friday, the old town and the Sacro Monte di Crea on Saturday, the Antiques Market on Sunday if it falls on the second of the month.

Outside the second Sunday the plan still holds: the centre on foot, the castle and the hills remain, with the UNESCO landscape that brings together five wine-growing areas between the Langhe and the Monferrato.

Dreaming of a weekend unlike any other? Book your tandem skydive and build the rest around wineries, villages and markets.
